WINTER STUDIO is a Toronto-based architectural design studio working across North America and internationally. The studio undertakes work across a range of scales and typologies, with a particular interest in projects that present complex architectural puzzles, leading to solutions that are both distinctive and logical. From custom residences and retreats, to agricultural and cultural projects, each work is shaped by the distinct qualities of its site, climate, and function.
Led by Mat Winter (BCIN, OAA IAP, M.Arch, Hon. B.A.S.), WINTER STUDIO balances conceptual thinking with technical rigor, collaborating with clients and local consultants to develop thoughtful, site-responsive architecture.
Mat received his Master of Architecture (2015) from the University of Waterloo, where he was awarded the Ron Sims Purchase Prize and nominated for the Canadian Architect Student Award of Excellence. He received his Honours Bachelor of Architectural Studies (2012) degree from the University of Waterloo.
Before founding WINTER STUDIO, Mat worked at internationally recognized architecture firms including Herzog & de Meuron, MAD Architects, and Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, contributing to projects in Switzerland, China, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Canada. These experiences continue to inform the studio’s work, combining diverse architectural perspectives with a deep appreciation for place, materiality, and craftsmanship.
